ROLE
We need an experienced Paralegal Specialist at USAO (Southern District of Mississippi). The U.S. Attorney's Office Southern District of Mississippi requires direct paralegal assistance to support Assistant United States Attorneys engaged in debt collection and financial litigation. The office serves as a principal federal law enforcement agency and seeks skilled paralegal support to handle complex financial litigation matters across federal enforcement actions. In this role, you will provide paralegal assistance to support AUSAs in debt collection and financial litigation, handling document preparation, legal research, asset investigations, debtor interviews, case monitoring, and judgment enforcement in both criminal and civil matters. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare substantive legal documents including motions, writs of execution, garnishments, and post-judgment actions regarding federal debts.
- Conduct interviews with debtors, employers, and agency officials to assess the viability of legal collection actions.
- Monitor and analyze credit information and public records to determine debtor assets and liabilities.
- Review and summarize debtor financial information and recommend appropriate legal action to the AUSA.
- Research, analyze and summarize relevant legal precedents and prepare digests for assigned cases.
- Process debt collection claims referred by client agencies and make independent decisions regarding debt compromise, write-off, and claim referral.
- Enforce criminal judgments and commitment orders and perform collection functions for criminal cases.
- Enforce civil judgments and perform collection functions for civil judgments and settlements.
- Monitor case progress and ensure legal pleadings, forms, reports, and correspondence are prepared and submitted within established deadlines.
- Serve as primary contact for assigned financial litigation cases and provide status updates and procedural assistance.
- Confer with the United States Probation Office on debtor ability to pay and review databases and tracking systems to assess debt collection effectiveness.
- Assemble case files, document case status in automated databases, and generate recurring and ad hoc reports.
- Perform other duties related to the position as assigned.
BACKGROUND/REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Experience in tracing assets, seizing assets, and enforcing judgment liens
- Proficiency in word processing applications
- Ability to perform all job duties outlined in Section 2.0 of this Statement of Work
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Accounting background
- Experience utilizing online research tools (e.g., Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis)
EDUCATION
- Two (2) year paralegal degree or 2-year degree with additional paralegal certificate
LOCATION
- Jackson, MS 39201
CLEARANCE
- Ability to pass a background investigation in accordance with federal employment requirements
- Must be a US Citizen
- Valid United States driver's license and dependable vehicle or Government identification and dependable transportation
