ROLE
We need an experienced Senior API Gateway Engineer at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This position supports the IRS Enterprise API Gateway Modernization and Operations (EAGMO) effort, migrating the agency's gateway platform from legacy IBM webMethods to a new Government selected product. In this role, you will serve as lead technical resource for configuration, troubleshooting, and engineering support of the Enterprise API Gateway across test, pre-production, and production environments. You will design routes, policies, plugins, certificates, and control/data plane configurations within approved boundaries, lead product specific input on the new platform, provide technical leadership through migration wave execution and rollback readiness, support platform currency activities, and produce configuration baselines and runbooks. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serves as the lead technical resource for day-to-day configuration, troubleshooting, and engineering support of the Enterprise API Gateway (currently IBM webMethods) across test, pre-production, and production environments.
- Designs and implements API-side configuration changes — routes, policies, plugins, certificates, control/data plane patterns — within Government-approved architecture and security boundaries.
- Leads product-specific engineering input for the new API Gateway platform installation and configuration once authorized by the Government, coordinating closely with IRS infrastructure, identity, and network teams for anything outside contractor control.
- Provides technical leadership for phased API migration wave execution, including equivalent routing/policy/authentication configuration on the target platform and rollback readiness.
- Supports platform currency and technical refresh activities (runtime upgrades, SSO/certificate updates, gateway component upgrades) at the application/gateway-platform layer.
- Produces or reviews technical artifacts such as the Installation and Configuration Package, configuration baselines, and runbooks.
- Explicitly does not own enterprise infrastructure architecture, does not hold Infrastructure Architect authority, and does not make ATO/cybersecurity risk-acceptance decisions.
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
- 7 years of experience performing similar duties to this role
- Experience may include, but is not limited to, platforms such as Google Apigee, Kong, MuleSoft Anypoint API Manager, Microsoft Azure API Management, AWS API Gateway, IBM API Connect, RedHat 3scale, Axway Amplify, WSO2 API Manager, Tyk, or comparable enterprise API gateway products.
REQUIRED EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field
- MBI is preferred
LOCATION
- Remote – Preferred to be based in National Capital Region
CLEARANCE
- U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident is required
- Ability to obtain IRS Minimum Background Investigation security clearance

COMPENSATION
- Salary range: $155,000 – $175,000
