Legal Assistant
ROLE
We need an experienced Legal Assistant I at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of Pennsylvania (USAO EDPA). The USAO EDPA Criminal Division is responsible for prosecuting federal criminal matters on behalf of the United States. In this role, you will support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a wide range of technical legal assistance services across criminal and civil proceedings, including case preparation, court filings, legal research support, scheduling, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders. RESPONSIBILITIES
Support AUSAs by performing electronic court filings using ECF and PACER.
Assists with legal research using automated legal research tools, public information databases, and program specific resources, including support for electronic discovery and other aspects of criminal or civil proceedings.
Supports pretrial and trial activities by preparing, reviewing, and organizing case file materials and trial binders, and coordinating the scheduling of witnesses and court reporters.
Prepares internal authorizations for requesting goods and services such as deposition transcripts.
Maintains frequent interaction with investigative agencies and internal personnel.
Maintains calendars for active court matters by tracking filings, hearings, and trial dates, and scheduling conferences, interviews, and related deadlines for AUSAs.
Arranges travel by preparing itineraries and securing transportation and hotel reservations.
Assembles exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents, and organizes files and records for disposition or transfer to records storage.
Performs other related legal duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
At least 1 year of experience in a professional legal setting
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a courteous and tactful demeanor
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database systems for document preparation and data retrieval
Ability to establish, maintain, and organize case or project files
Attention to detail in reviewing and editing documents for typographical errors
Capability to schedule appointments, track deadlines, and maintain accurate calendars
Experience responding to inquiries regarding case status using database information
Skill in obtaining and sharing information with external agencies related to casework
Ability to conduct factual and legal research to support case development
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS
Associates degree in a related field or paralegal certificate - preferred
