Legal Assistant ROLE We need an experienced Legal Assistant to support the Civil Division at the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the Eastern District of Kentucky (EDKY). The USAO represents the federal government in civil litigation, and this role plays a critical part in ensuring effective case management and legal operations. As a Legal Assistant, you will provide comprehensive legal and administrative support to Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs), including drafting legal documents, managing court deadlines, and coordinating case files. RESPONSIBILITIES
Review and prepare legal documents such as pleadings, motions, notices, and subpoenas using office software applications
Proofread and cite-check legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents
Conduct basic factual research on individuals/entities and perform basic legal research on statutes, regulations, and case law
Assemble exhibits and document compilations for use in interviews, depositions, hearings, and trials
File pleadings using the court’s electronic filing system
Redact documents prior to filing or production
Collaborate with AUSAs, paralegals, and litigation support staff to manage discovery in civil cases
Open, maintain, and close litigation case files and prepare them for storage
Track court deadlines including filings, hearings, and trials using calendar systems
Schedule online and in-person meetings, appointments, conferences, and interviews for AUSAs
Arrange travel including booking transportation and accommodations and preparing necessary documentation
Sort, review, and route incoming correspondence to AUSAs or other staff based on understanding of office functions
Receive visitors and answer or return telephone calls on behalf of AUSAs
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a courteous and tactful demeanor
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database systems for document preparation and data retrieval
Ability to establish, maintain, and organize case or project files
Attention to detail in reviewing and editing documents for typographical errors
Capability to schedule appointments, track deadlines, and maintain accurate calendars
Experience responding to inquiries regarding case status using database information
Skill in obtaining and sharing information with external agencies related to casework
Ability to conduct factual and legal research to support case development
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS
Associates degree in a related field or paralegal certificate - preferred
